Otis Rush – Right Place, Wrong Time – Bullfrog Records / Pure Pleasure Records (vinyl)

Pure Pleasure Records has re-mastered Right Time, Wrong Place to 180-gram vinyl with sterling results.

Published on May 14, 2013

Otis Rush – Right Place, Wrong Time – Bullfrog Records (1976) BF 301/ Pure Pleasure Records (2012) 180-gram stereo audiophile vinyl, 40:44 ****:

(Otis Rush – guitar, vocals; Doug Kilmer – bass; John Kahn – bass; Bob Jones – drums; Fred Burton – guitar; Mark Naftalin – piano; Ira Kamin – organ; John Wilmeth – trumpet; Ron Stallings – tenor saxophone; Hart McNee – alto saxophone)

Otis Rush was born in Mississippi and eventually moved to Chicago to become a blues legend. That narrative may not differentiate him from a lot of blues pickers. However, Rush was a rare left-handed player. In an unusual twist, he played a left-handed guitar, strung upside down with the low E string on the bottom. There is no mistaking his sound. He earned his pedigree in Westside Chicago blues clubs and recorded for several labels, including Chess.

In the sixties he was produced by rock stars Michael Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites. Adding rock and soul to the blues repertoire introduced Rush to a new generation of fans. At Capitol Records (the same label that turned down The Doors) he laid down tracks for an album titled Right Place, Wrong Time.. The project was scrapped, but Rush eventually bought the master tapes. Five years later, in 1976, it was released on Bullfrog Records.

Pure Pleasure Records has re-mastered Right Time, Wrong Place to audiophile vinyl. Listening to this musical giant, it appears that Capitol did not have a sense of the power of a true blues musician. The album gets off to a rousing start on Ike Turner’s “Tore Up”. All of the classic blues chops are represented in this brisk, up tempo romp. Rush’s guitar leads are precise and crisp. He is as good a vocalist as any of the older blues giants. Different from the template, he adds a short key shift on the bridge. As he transitions to late night vibe (title cut), the arrangements which showcase his guitar and vocals remain constant. On the first instrumental “Easy Go”, the soulful punctuation (especially by the horn section), amps up this muscular jam. His rhythm section (John Kahn/bass; Bob Jones/drums and Fred Burton/rhythm guitar) is complementary and cohesive.

Most of the songs percolate, and Rush’s tasteful concise guitar riffs and vocal phrasing are fluid. Albert King’s “Natural Ball” is dynamic. The music has a lot of soul. This resonates on the second instrumental, “I Wonder Why”. This is Chicago blues at its finest. In a more conventional translation, “Your Turn To Cry” is inimitable with the subtle key-shifting introduction Mark Naftalin spices things up with his percussive licks on piano. Rush explodes with intensity on “Lonely Man”. His coarser urgent vocals match the group’s intensity, and the energy never abates. A slight departure is Rush’s agile cover of “Rainy Night In Georgia”. It is much different from Brooke Benton’s meditative r & b…a blues opus! There is ample originality to separate this recording from typical genre offerings.

Pure Pleasure Records has re-mastered Right Time, Wrong Place to 180-gram vinyl with sterling results. The stereo mix is very-balanced, with Rush’s vocals and guitar always centered. You will need to turn the volume up to appreciate the full effect of the horns, piano and organ. For blues enthusiasts, the liner notes by Dick Shurman provide assorted details about the obstacles in Rush’s career and the release of this album.

TrackList:
Side One: Tore Up; Right Place, Wrong Time; Easy Go; Three Times A Fool; Rainy Night In Georgia
Side Two: Natural Ball; I Wonder Why; Your Turn To Cry; Lonely Man; Take A Look Behind

–Robbie Gerson

Beware of Mr. Baker DVD Contest

A couple of months ago ,the CVR blog, working with SnagFilms, a New York-based film distributor; gave away a free download to watch the film 'Beware Of Mr. Baker.'

Well, luckily they are back again and this time we have a DVD to give away.  You can enter by emailing the CVR blog with the words "Beware of Mr. Baker DVD Contest" in the subject line to this email address rbenson30@wi.rr.com.  Winner will be chosen in a random drawing held on Friday May 24, 2013. Limit one entry per person, winner will be announced as soon as possible.

'Beware of Mr. Baker' is a vivid portrait of a rock icon, including the good, the bad and the over the top lifestyle of one of rock’s legendary wild men.

At home with rock ‘n’ roll monster Ginger Baker, Cream’s legendary scarlet-maned, hell-raising drummer. This no-holds-barred, sad, and hilarious portrait of the man referred to as rock’s first great drummer (and perhaps still its best) lets him tell his own story, intercut with footage of his continent-hopping life, from London to L.A., Nigeria, Italy, South Africa, and (way) beyond. Baker may have broken the mold musically, but his violent, dyspeptic mood swings, fueled by a multi-decade heroin addiction, went a long way to making him persona non grata even among the music greats who still revere his work. Eric Clapton, Johnny Rotten, Charlie Watts, and Lars Ulrich, Baker’s 4 wives, and 3 grown children all have something to say about him: “He’s a force of nature,” “he’s the greatest drummer any of us had ever heard,” “he’s mad,” and “he’s fairly consistently horrible” are just a few of them.

[5 stars]

“RUDELY FUNNY! The old stories and misadventures… out they come, reshaped by Bulger  via archival footage and sly animation into a testament to Baker’s musicianship… The guy basically invented the modern drum solo.”– Joshua Rothkopf, Time Out New York

“Makes a persuasive argument that Mr. Baker was the greatest of all rock drummers.”  – A.O. Scott, New York Times

“Captivating! A must-see film.”– Margaret Barton-Fumo, Filmcomment.com

“Baker comes across as a living embodiment of his music. Baker remains a fierce creature of music.”
– Eric Kohn, Indiewire.com

“A hell of a musician and a real son of a bitch.”  – Henry Stewart, L Magazine

FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 20, 2013

DEAR JERRY:Part of a recent column identified all of the records made by the members of Three Dog Night.

You say that just before they changed their name to Three Dog Night, Cory, Danny, and Chuck were known as Redwood, and they recorded "Time to Get Alone."

This made me curious about their Redwood period, so I went online, only to find this one short sentence: "During 1967 the trio made some recordings with Brian Wilson, and using the name of Redwood."

Is this all that is known about Redwood? Can you dig up more info?
—Trisha Stanley, Evansville, Ind.

DEAR TRISHA: I already have.

By February 1967, after over three months on the charts, "Good Vibrations" dropped out of the Top 100. Rather than follow their all-time biggest hit with another Capitol single, "Heroes and Villains" came out on Brother records (No. 1001), a label Brian founded for new Beach Boys releases as well as other artists he wanted to produce. Conveniently, Capitol agreed to manufacture Brother records for Brian.

He invited Danny Hutton, already with a couple of solo hits to his credit, to bring his Redwood group to record at the Capitol studios, and be produced by Brian Wilson. These summer '67 sessions yielded enough material for an entire album, probably 10 to 12 tracks.

Opinions vary as to why Brian and Brother shelved the Redwood master tapes, but the proposed LP never came out.

Among those tunes is "Darlin'," one of the Beach Boys biggest hits from the 1967 to '77 period. Brian originally wrote it for Redwood, but he recycled the instrumental track and replaced the Redwood vocals with the Beach Boys.

As for "Time to Get Alone," Carl Wilson produced a newly recorded version for inclusion on their 1969 LP, "20/20."

DEAR JERRY: Often, with only a few lyrics provided, you have identified songs for bewildered readers.

Unfortunately, it is much more difficult when the record in question is an instrumental, which is one of the categories I collect.

My mystery tune was a Top 30 hit in the early 1960s, at least it was in Cleveland on Color Channel 1420, WHK.

They played it every day, along with another instrumental I loved, "Underwater," by the Frogmen.

However, those two are nothing alike. "Underwater" is surf style and the other is more like Mantovani than the Frogmen. It is fully orchestrated with lots of lush strings.

Those are the only clues I have. Ring any bells with you?
—Jackson Clarke, Mentor, Ohio

DEAR JACKSON: Your clues may be few but they rang all the right bells.

By zooming in on March through May of 1961, when "Underwater" was riding high (Top 5) on the charts in the Cleveland area, I discovered 21 additional instrumentals:

"A Night with Daddy 'G'" (Church Street Five); "African Waltz" (Cannonball Adderley and Johnny Dankworth); "Apache" (Jorgen Ingman); "Asia Minor" (Kokomo); "Bumble Boogie" (B. Bumble and the Stingers); "Exodus to Jazz" (Eddie Harris); "Green Grass of Texas" (Texans); "Hearts of Stone" (Bill Black's Combo); "Lil' Ole Me" (Cornbread & Jerry); "Lonely Sands" (Dunes); "Lullaby of the Leaves" (Ventures); "On the Rebound" (Floyd Cramer); "One Mint Julep" (Ray Charles Orchestra); "One-Eyed Jacks" (Ferrante & Teicher); "Son of the Rain" (Roger Williams); "That's the Way with Love" (Piero Soffici); "Theme from Bonanza" (Al Caiola); "Theme from My Three Sons" (Lawrence Welk); "Wheels" (String-A-Longs); "Yellow Bird" (Arthur Lyman); and "You Can't Sit Down" (Phil Upchurch).

From these choices, I feel the only one matching your clues is the Italian import, "That's the Way with Love" (Kip 224). More than just a regional hit, "That's the Way with Love" also made the Top 60 nationally.

If one didn't know it was by Piero, they might think they were hearing Percy Faith and His Orchestra … or Mantovani.

We would like to welcome a new advertiser to the CVR blog, an old friend in vinyl, Gary and his site RockArtPictureShow.com

What is Rock Art Picture Show?  Just the best way to frame and display album cover art and picture discs.  In fact, I am looking at my frames on the wall by my computer station, an old Little Richard LP and the Beatles' Sgt Pepper pic disc.  In my music room I have more framed art.  I'll let Gary explain his concept:

"There's two primary reasons our patented Record Album Frame is the Record Album Frame chosen by the Smithsonian, Home & Garden TV, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and thousands of album frame Internet purchasers:

It's our look - our matted patented album frame simply creates a sleek looking album frame display unlike the ordinary clip album frames.

The Rock Art Picture Show Record Album Frame does not use clips to press LP's into place, just slide your LP into our acrylic Record Album Frame to easily matte and frame your record album cover instantly.

Our Record Album Frame does more than just hang an album cover on the wall, our sleek album frame displays cover art as contemporary art with class and style.  Additionally, this is the only Record Album Frame offered at The Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame gift shop and The Smithsonian selected us for exhibit purposes."

So, stop by the site and look around, these are the perfect gift for Father's Day or birthdays or anytime you want to show some love to the music lover in your life!  Go to RockArtPictureShow

RockArtPictureShow has also launched a Facebook Page HERE and Pinterest boards HERE
(I am helping with these sites, stop on by!!)

Stop on by all three sites and be wowed by the art and history of rock and roll!!

Govt Mule - Life Before Insanity

Life Before Insanity is Gov't Mule's fifth album, released in 2000 to great critical acclaim. Warren Haynes and Allen Woody formed a power trio with Matt Abts after leaving Southern Rock staple Allman Brothers Band.

Precious tracks on this album include the haunting title track, the powerful "Wandering Child", "No Need To Suffer" and "Lay Your Burden Down" (the latter two are featuring Ben Harper on vocals). The most hit sensitive track proved to be "Bad Little Doggie", a ZZ-Top like burner, which received lots of airplay.

Life Before Insanity was the last album featuring bassist Allen Woody, who tragically died just six months after its release. Finally, it's released on vinyl for the first time!

Marvin Gaye - Midnight Love

Midnight Love was Marvin Gaye's final album, conceived in 1982 after a long recluse in Oostende, Belgium. Harmonious, sensual, uplifting and funky, Midnight Love became his swansong after Gaye went through a rough time, secluded from the mainstream and finding out where he belonged. We can safely say, it would be in the studio.

He wrote every song on Midnight Love himself, which culminated in the smash hit "Sexual Healing". A creative genius and trained multi-instrumentalist, Gaye played every instrument on the song himself, except for the guitar. We can only guess what gems Gaye would have produced in his later years, as his life was taken by his own father just 18 months later.

Alter Bridge - Blackbird

2007's Blackbird marked the creative (and commercial) launch of Alter Bridge, the follow-up project to Rock radio's favorite Creed. After Creed's demise Mark Tremonti, Scott Phillips and Brian Marshall teamed up with singer Myles Kennedy, and formed Alter Bridge as an outlet for their creative energy. Kennedy contributed a considerable amount to the overall songwriting process of Blackbird, which resulted in a heavy, groovy and aggressive album.
Alternating acoustic interludes and hard-hitting choruses, the band's new found songwriting freedom resulted in a fresh start for this Florida based Rock band. The D-side contains a beautiful etched artwork - must be seen to believe!

Uriah Heep - Live '73

Live 1973 is the definitive live recording of the classic Uriah Heep line up. Having found worldwide success by releasing a string of big hitting albums, the band toured extensively during the early '70s. The band was recorded before an ecstatic crowd in Birmingham, UK, delivering a set of heavy Rock classics with all volume knobs on 11. Featuring improvised jams, wailing organs and incredible guitar solos, Live 1973 is a double whammy of Uriah Heep classics and a testament to the band's legendary live performances. Songs like "Traveller In Time" and "Love Machine" literally burst out of the grooves. The record closes with a medley of Rock & Roll classics, seamed together like only the Heep can.

10 CC - How Dare You
How Dare You (1976) is the fourth album by these British Art-Pop Rockers. Its brilliant cover art was designed by the recently deceased Storm Thorgersson of Hipgnosis. After attaining worldwide success with their hit "I'm Not In Love", 10cc returned with a varied set of songs, often tongue-in-cheek humor and eccentric songwriting. Hits "I'm Mandy, Fly Me" and "Art For Art's Sake" are little stories with wonderful poppy hooks and catchy choruses. This is 10cc at their creative peak!

Musicology 101

Let's have a little fun, so here are some rock and roll nuggets so you can win at music trivia games and become a top musicologist!

Scotland's hard-rock group Nazareth recorded a tune called "Love Hurts" as a B-side filler, never intending it to be a hit. Record buyers felt differently and the single rose to #8 in the US and #15 in the UK. One count revealed that over 42 different artists have recorded the song, including The Everly Brothers and Roy Orbison.

James Brown, Bill Haley, Ike Turner and B.B. King all started their music careers as disc jockeys.

Dave Clark turned down his initial appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show because he'd never heard of it. It was only after the band got to America and performed on the program, did he learn how big the Sullivan show was in the US.

Although they are mostly remembered for accompanying Elvis Presley on over 360 songs, The Jordanaires also sang back-up on 30,000 other recordings.

When Paul McCartney and John Lennon first played "She Loves You" for Paul's dad, he said "That's very nice son, but there's enough of these Americanisms around. Couldn't you sing "She loves you, yes, yes, yes!" The duo collapsed in a fit of laughter.

Vee Jay Records was the most successful Black owned and operated record company before Motown. The firm was founded in 1953 by Vivian Carter (the "Vee") and her husband, James Bracken (the "Jay").

Brian Jones, the original lead guitarist of The Rolling Stones, is said to have fathered six illegitimate children before his untimely death on July 3rd, 1969.

The Mothers Of Invention are believed to have released the first double album with 'Freak Out!' in early 1967.

In 1962, Gene Pitney recorded "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" for the movie of the same name, starring John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart. Although the song reached #4 on the Billboard singles chart, it was never included in the film.

When the Beatles made their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show on February 9th, 1964, producers received over 50,000 applications for the 728 seats in the TV studio.

Alan Gordon, the co-writer of The Turtles' hit "Happy Together" said that he wrote the melody to the song based on an open string pattern used by a bandmate to tune his guitar.

Chip Taylor is the stage name of American songwriter James Wesley Voight, brother of actor Jon Voight and uncle of actress Angelina Jolie. Besides writing The Troggs' hit "Wild Thing", he also penned "Angel of the Morning", by both Merrilee Rush and Juice Newton as well as "I Can Make It With You" by The Pozo Seco Singers and many other hit records.

In 1950, Frank Sinatra made his TV debut on NBC's Bob Hope-hosted "Star-Spangled Review."

In 1957, at Norman Petty's studio in Clovis, New Mexico, Buddy Holly and the Crickets recorded "Not Fade Away" and "Everyday."

In 1957, Buddy Holly and the Crickets released their first record, "That'll Be The Day." (US #3)(#1 UK)  The song had its genesis in a trip to the movies by Holly, Allison and Sonny Curtis in June 1956. The John Wayne film 'The Searchers' was playing. Wayne's frequently-used, world-weary catchphrase, "that'll be the day" was the Inspiration behind the song.  The cut is featured on the debut album by the Crickets, 'The Chirping" Crickets,' which was issued on November 27, 1957. The song is considered a classic in the rock and roll genre and is listed at #39 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.  It was also the first song to be recorded by the Quarrymen, the skiffle group that subsequently became the Beatles.

On May 27, 1963, the album 'The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan' was released by Columbia in the USA. It reached #22 in the US charts and #1 in the UK. The album showcased Dylan's songwriting talent for the first time and propelled him to national and international fame.  Before the album's release, he was one amongst many folk-singers. Afterwards, at the age of 22, Dylan was regarded as a major artist, perhaps even a spokesman for disaffected youth. The LP sold more than one million copies in the US and Dylan himself came to acknowledge Freewheelin' as the album that marked the start of his success. The album cover features a photograph of Dylan with Suze Rotolo. It was taken in February 1963, a few weeks after Rotolo had returned from Italy, by CBS staff photographer Don Hunstein at the corner of Jones Street and West 4th Street in the West Village, New York City, close to the apartment where the couple lived at the time.

In 1963, the Beatles released "From Me To You" in the US.

In 1964, eleven boys were suspended from a school in Coventry, England for having Mick Jagger haircuts.

In 1966, in London, prior to his concert at the Royal Albert Hall, Bob Dylan welcomed the Beatles in his dressing room. Paul McCartney, who was eager to impress the singer, played him an electronic version of a song that would later become "Tomorrow Never Knows." Dylan laughed and left the room after saying to Paul, "Oh, I get it, you don't want to be cute anymore."

In 1967, Otis Redding's backup band, the Bar-Kays, enter the US charts with "Soul Finger," an instrumental that will peak at #3 R&B and #17 Pop. Six months later, four members of the band died in the plane crash that killed Redding.

In 1967, Columbia and RCA Victor, two of America's biggest record labels, announce that they will raise the list price of LPs by one dollar on June 1st. It was the first increase since 1953.

In 1968, at the Capitol Tower Recording Studio in Hollywood, Glen Campbell recorded "Wichita Lineman."

In 1971, the Canadian light Rock group, the Bells were awarded a Gold record for "Stay Awhile," thanks in part to the sexy, breathy vocals of singers Cliff Edwards and Jackie Ralphs.

In 1972, David Bowie appeared at Ebbisham Hall, Epsom, England on his Ziggy Stardust tour.

On this day in 1972, "Oh, Girl" by the Chi-Lites was the #1 song.

In 1975, in the US, Paul McCartney released "Venus and Mars," the fourth album by his band Wings.

In 1977, Declan McManus made his 'live' debut at the Nashville in London as Elvis Costello.

In 1977, the Sex Pistols single "God Save The Queen" was released in the UK. Banned by TV and radio, high street shops and pressing plant workers refused to handle the record. It sold 200,000 copies in one week and peaked at #2 on the UK charts behind Rod Stewart's "I Don't Want to Talk About It." There have been persistent rumours, (never confirmed or denied), that it was actually the biggest-selling single in the UK at the time, and the British Phonographic Industry conspired to keep it off the #1 slot.  The record cover, depicting a defaced picture of Queen Elizabeth II, was designed by Jamie Reid and in 2001 was named #1 in a list of 100 greatest record covers of all time by Q magazine.

In 1980, during the taping of a Van Halen TV special in Rome, David Lee Roth fractured his nose and suffered a concussion when he leaped off Alex Van Halen's drum riser and hit the stage lights.

'Abbey Road' Album Cover Saves Lives

One of the most iconic album covers of all time, The Beatles' "Abbey Road" photo graces merchandise of all kinds, and now it graces public service announcements against jaywalking in Calcutta. About 140,000 people die in road accidents each year in India, the highest rate in the world. So the new billboards, showing John, Paul, George and Ringo flawlessly demonstrating the proper way to use a crosswalk and bearing the slogan, "If they can, why can't you?" is needed. Impressively, since the posters went up, accident rates have fallen by 20 percent.

FOR THE WEEK OF MAY 27, 2013

DEAR JERRY: You may not remember me, but four years ago you solved a major musical mystery of mine.

I asked you what song includes my uncommon name (Gwenevieve) in the lyrics, along with quite a few other names for girls.

You correctly told me it is "Girls, Girls, Girls," a 1960 hit for Steve Lawrence.

A year or two later, there was a similar novelty, one with lyrics mostly made up of assorted titles of then-current hits. I don't know the title or group, but I recall they used "Rama Lama Ding Dong" more than once. That could be part of the title.

What are all of the song titles they used, and who recorded each one?
—Gwenevieve Mason, Everett, Mass.

DEAR GWENEVIEVE: I remember you well. I have heard from Gwens, Gwendolyns, and one Genevieve, but you are the only Gwenevieve I know.

As with you, I would think anyone who ever heard this unique recording would not forget it. Released in July 1961, it is "Dedicated (To the Songs I Love)" (Imperial 5763), by the 3 Friends.

There are similar songs that mention other titles, such as Jimmie Beaumont's "Ev'rybody's Cryin'" (20 titles) and Bob Luman's "Let's Think About Living" (three titles) but I can't think of another one that references 41 contemporary songs! Every one of them came out, and charted, during the first half of '61. during the first half of '61.

In order heard, here are the titles (and artists) these three friends love. Seven are repeated (shown with asterisk), but we list those only the first time used:

"Dedicated to the One I Love" (Shirelles)
"Rama Lama Ding Dong" (Edsels)*
"Daddy's Home" (Shep and the Limelites)
"Runaway" (Del Shannon)
"Mother-in-Law" (Ernie K-Doe)
"A Hundred Pounds of Clay" (Gene McDaniels)
"What'd I Say" (Jerry Lee Lewis)
"That's It - I Quit - I'm Movin' On" (Sam Cooke)
"Walk Right Back" (Everly Brothers)
"Spanish Harlem" (Ben E. King)
"Just for Old Time's Sake" (McGuire Sisters)
"Lil' Ole Me" (Cornbread and Jerry)
"Travelin' Man" (Rick Nelson)
"Halfway to Paradise" (Tony Orlando)
"Mama Said" (Shirelles)*
"Ling-Ting-Tong" (Buddy Knox)*
"Stand By Me" (Ben E. King)*
"You Can Depend on Me" (Brenda Lee)
"Find Another Girl" (Jerry Butler)
"Some Kind of Wonderful" (Drifters)
"Bye Bye Baby" (Mary Wells)
"The Continental Walk" (Rollers)
"Where the Boys Are" (Connie Francis)
"One Mint Julep" (Ray Charles)
"Peanut Butter" (Marathons)
"The Second Time Around" (Frank Sinatra)
"Foolin' Around" (Kay Starr)
"A Million to One" (Jimmy Charles)
"At Last" (Etta James)
"Surrender" (Elvis Presley)
"Trust in Me" (Etta James)
"Gee Whiz (Look at His Eyes)" (Carla Thomas)
"Cupid" (Sam Cooke)
"Saved" (Lavern Baker)
"Tragedy" (Fleetwoods)
"Little Boy Sad" (Johnny Burnette)
"Funny" (Maxine Brown)
"Little Devil" (Neil Sedaka)
"Little Miss Stuck Up" (Playmates)*
"Sleepy-Eyed John" (Johnny Horton)*
"Together" (Connie Francis)*

The last three are followed with brief mention of U.S. Bonds, one of the top recording artists in the early '60s: "Little Miss Stuck up and Sleepy-Eyed John are now back Together buying U.S. Bonds."

These 3 Friends, Julius Brown; Walter Hammond; and Clay Hammond, are in no way connected to the 3 Friends who, in 1956, recorded "Blanche": Joey Villa; Frank Stropoli; and Tony Grochowski.

Knowing how many ladies you've made curious as to whether or not their name is in Steve Lawrence's "Girls, Girls, Girls" (1960), we have gathered them here for a reunion. In the order acknowledged, they are:

Donna; Peggy Sue; Susie; Mary Lou; Sheila; Shirley; Catherine; Tina; Lena; Marilyn; Toni; Joni; Mary Jean; Janet; Mary; Francine; Phyllis; Connie; Gwenevieve; Lilly; Molly; Joyce; Eve; Carol; Jane; Joanne; Darlene; Lorraine; Mona; Rona; Natalie; Sunny; Bunny; Beverly; Brooke; Eve; Hazel; Ruth; Adele; Doris; Iris; Michelle; Debbie; Brenda; Arlene; Audrey; Eydie; Maxine; Judy; Annie; Helen; Sandy; Corky; Bunky; Vicky; Bobbie; Nancy; Dottie; Etta; Ruthie; Peggy; Rosie; Karen; Alice; Lindsay; Zelda; Phyllis; Marsha; Myrna; Terri; Lucy; Rhoda; Flossie; Clara; Ethel; Lois; Mina; Nana; Mattie; Lana; Patty; Lizzy; Betty; Zsa Zsa; Dora; Becky; Billie; Eva; Gertie; Anna; Sadie; Minnie; Angie; Shelly; Bessie; Sharon; and Barbara.

DEAR JERRY: Isn't all the excitement over the 50th anniversary of the Rolling Stones one year too early?

I seem to recall them arriving on the scene after the Beatles, several months into 1964.

Right or wrong?
—Terrence Moore, Columbus, Wis.

DEAR TERRENCE: Right you are, but only if you're talking about their arrival on the U.S. scene, and charts.

The Stones made their first record in the UK in June 1963, a revival of Chuck Berry's "Come On" (Decca 11675) — almost exactly 50 years ago.

Their first U.S. hit, "Not Fade Away" (London 9557), made its chart debut 49 years ago this month.

IZ ZAT SO? Stones fans with a taste for 180-gram audiophile pressings will delight in a planned series titled "The Rolling Stones Clearly Classic."

In conjunction with their 50th anniversary, this ABKCO series premiers this week with clear vinyl editions of three of the band's legendary albums: "Beggars Banquet"; "Let It Bleed"; and "Hot Rocks 1964-1971."

AC/DC and Manowar are among several bands that have claimed to hold the record since the Who, however Guinness no longer includes a category of loudest band, reportedly because it does not want to encourage hearing damage.

In 1977, Britain's BBC announced a ban on the Sex Pistols' anti-royalist song "God Save The Queen", saying it is 'in gross bad taste'. new releases from our friends at MusicOnVinyl.com

Sade - Promise

Promise, the follow-up album of their multi-million selling debut album Diamond Life (MOVLP602), was released in 1985 and includes typical Sade songs and hit singles like "The Sweetest Taboo", "Never As Good As The First Time", "Is It A Crime" and "Jezebel".

Promise became the band's first album to top the albums chart in both the United Kingdom and the United States, assisted by an appearance at the Live Aid charity concert and a cameo in the film Absolute Beginners. Over the years, it was certified double platinum in the UK and quadruple platinum in the US, with Sade herself returning again as the queen of cool.  180 gram audiophile vinyl & Gatefold sleeve Includes the hit singles "The Sweetest Taboo" and "Never As Good As The First Time"

Otis Redding - In Person At The Whiskey A Go Go

Recorded at the famous L.A. club Whisky A Go Go in 1966, this album captures the raw energy of a small Otis Redding gig. Playing with his own touring band (not Booker T & the MG's as per his Monterey gig and European performances), this is Otis in his tried & true form – with a kick-ass band that blew the chitlin circuit's roofs off. 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Roaring versions of "Respect", "I Can't Turn You Loose", "These Arms Of Mine" and "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag" are the definitive Otis Redding live tracks anyone should own. 5/5 stars, Allmusic

Gary Moore Band - Grinding Stone

Released in 1973, Grinding Stone was Gary Moore's solo debut. The music on this album could be described as experimental Boogie Rock, but on the album Moore explores a number of styles, from the title track's instrumental Boogie Rock to soulful vocals in "Sail Across the Mountain" and 17 minutes of guitar and keyboard excursions in the surprisingly funky "Spirit."

Often cited as an overlooked gem and totally ahead of its time, Grinding Stone showcases Moore at his most experimental, mixing up styles and a taste of the triumphs that followed with his work in Colosseum II & Thin Lizzy.

John Coltrane - Ole Coltrane

Once again John Coltrane proves his appreciable musical skills by ultimately advancing the entire Jazz-art-form with Olé.

The title track is striking in resemblance to the Spanish influence heard on Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain (MOVLP029), although Olé takes this vibe a bit further; Coltrane's combo stretches out with inspired improvisations from Dolphy, Hubbard, Tyner, and of course Coltrane, respectively. The haunting beauty of "Aisha" stands as one of the finest collaborative efforts between Tyner - the song's author - and Coltrane. Another fine classic Jazz release by Music On Vinyl indeed.  180 gram audiophile vinyl

BURNING RED IVANHOE - BRI

Burnin Red Ivanhoe is the finest export product out of Danmark, playing a special brand of psychedelic Prog Rock since 1967. Sharing the stage with Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath and Uriah Heep, these guys have seen it all, front row. Combining Jazz-Rock with R&B, Blues and psychedelia, the band stretched musical boundaries since their first album M144.

On BRI, they have returned to their original approach of singing in Danish, successfully combining poetry with Rock music. Must be heard to believe! 180 gram audiophile vinyl & Insert

Black Sabbath - 13
Vinyl Record 2013 (PRE-ORDER 6-10)

The drum tracks on the album were laid down by RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE sticksman Brad Wilk following original drummer Bill Ward's decision to bow out of the reunion. Osbourne went on the BBC in England to discuss the band's new single, "God Is Dead?" and the inspiration behind the track. Ozzy explained, "I was in somebody's office and there was a magazine on a table and it just said, 'God Is Dead', and I suddenly thought about 9/11 and all these terrorist things and religion and how many people have died in the name of religion. When you think about the tragedy that's happened throughout time, it just came in my head. You'd think by now that their God would have stopped people dying in the name of, so I just starting thinking that people must be thinking, 'Where is God? God is dead' and it just hit me."

Musicology 101

Let's have a little fun, so here are some rock and roll nuggets so you can win at music trivia games and become a top musicologist!

While The Rascals' "People Got to Be Free" was perceived by some as being related to the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, it was actually recorded before the latter's death. The song was written partly as a reaction to an ugly encounter when the band was threatened by a group of rednecks after their tour vehicle broke down in Fort Pierce, Florida.

In 1964, The Beatles topped the Cashbox Magazine record chart for sixteen straight weeks with four different songs. From January 25th until May 16th the Fab Four lead the best sellers list with "I Want To Hold Your Hand" (8 weeks), "She Loves You" (2 weeks), "Twist And Shout" (1 week) and "Can't Buy Me Love" (5 weeks). Their streak was interrupted by Louie Armstrong's "Hello Dolly" for one week before "Love Me Do" put them back on top for another week.

In 1967, a song called "Yellow Balloon" by a group of studio musicians billed under the same name, reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100. The problem was that there was no actual band that could go on tour in support of the single or to record an album. Producer Ken Handler of Canterbury Records enlisted the help of Don Grady, a former Mouseketeer and better known as Robbie Douglas of the TV series My Three Sons, who put a band together and recorded a self-titled LP that is now considered a cult classic.

According to Guinness World Records 2009, Led Zeppelin hold the record for the "Highest Demand for Tickets for One Music Concert" as 20 million on-line requests were made for their December 10th, 2007 reunion show at The O2 Arena in London.

When Elvis bought Graceland for he and his parents to live in, he said he wanted to create "the most beautiful bedroom in Memphis" for his mother. Gladys, however had other priorities. She wanted to add a chicken coop and a hog pen.

The hit version of Neil Diamond's "Cherry, Cherry" has no drum track because it was recorded as a demo and was never intended to be released as a single. In later sessions, drums and horns were included, but none of those tracks turned out as well as the demo.

When Rupert Holmes wrote "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)", he originally wrote it as "If you like Humphrey Bogart and getting caught in the rain", before coming up with the final lyrics. He would later admit that at the time, he had never tasted a Pina Colada.

America reached #8 in the US with "Ventura Highway" in 1973. Although no such highway exists, there is a Ventura County in California and Highway 101 runs through it.

Although a tombstone inscribed with the name "Eleanor Rigby" stands in the graveyard of St. Peter's Parish Church in Woolton, Liverpool, just yards away from where Paul McCartney met John Lennon in 1957, Paul said he came up with the name Eleanor from actress Eleanor Bron, who had starred with the Beatles in the film Help!. Rigby came from Rigby & Evens Ltd, Wine & Spirit Shippers, the name of a store in Bristol. In 1984, Paul was quoted as saying "I just liked the name. I was looking for a name that sounded natural. Eleanor Rigby sounded natural."
